His father, Llewellyn was killed in France in late 1918 and never knew his father. Legacy played an important role in his life. He Served in the Second World War in Middle East and New Guinea, suffering numerous bouts of Malaria several as well as other tropical illnesses. He was a Pharmacist and a member of the 2/6 Field Ambulance. His death certificate in 1996 indicated the impact that the war had on his physical health throughly his life and it was a contributing factor in his death.
He was an only child, as his mother Stella Leak, did not remarry. As a consequence, when he married Valerie Bitmeade, they had 6 children. He rarely spoke about the war to his family and he was a devoted father and a top South Australian Tennis player, coached by Harry Hopman pre WW2. He ensured that all his children had good education, could play Tennis ans were strong swimmers: all essential skills,he felt for life post war in Australia.
