Great uncle John “Jack” Ronald Lord enlisted full-time in the Citizen Military Force on 2 Sep 1942, a few weeks after turning 18, and was assigned to Ground Defence (GDD). He was soon transferred to the Australian Army Ordnance Corps Tank/Division (AAOC T/D), then in April 1943 was transferred to 3 Australian Tank Workshops at Bathurst. In July he was sent to the Junior Leaders School for 1 month, then in September transferred to 6 Advanced Ammunition Depot (6 AAD).

 


Jack enlisted with the 2nd AIF on 4 May 1944 at age 19, and in October was transferred to the 14 Advanced Ammunition Depot in QLD (14 AAD). On 4 May 1945 he left Brisbane for the South West Pacific Area of operations, arriving on the island of Morotai in Indonesia on 13 May. On 21 July he was sent to Balikpapan on Borneo as part of the 145 Australian Forward Ammunition Depot (145 FAD), which was part of the invasion by the Australian 7th Division. He remained on Borneo for 6 months with the 145 FAD while the 7th conducted clean up operations and maintained civil order. He arrived back in Brisbane on 4 February 1946, and was honourably discharged on 25 March. In 1949 he got married in Sydney.

Awarded the Pacific Star, War Medal, and Australian Service Medal 1939-1945.
