William Dennis Bourke was born in 1874, he stated on his enlistment form that he was born in Randwick NSW, but his birth and those of his siblings are registered in Queensland.

He was the second child born to John and Mary Ann (O'Neill) Bourke, and was one of 7 siblings.

In 1902, prior to his enlistment, he worked as a labourer in the maintenance branch of the Queensland Railways.

William was 41 years old when he enlisted. He was unmarried. 

He stated his previous military experience as 7 years in the Morton Regiment. The Moreton Regiment, also known as the First Queensland (Moreton) Regiment, was a military unit in Queensland, Australia. It was formed in 1879 by amalgamating four Brisbane-based infantry companies within the Queensland Defence Force. 

William did not spend long in the AIF, he was sent home from the Suez in August 1916 aboard the HS Borda, for medical reasons. He was discharged 11/10/1916 for disability reasons.

William Bourke died in Queensland 20/05/1955. He was 81 years old.
