Son of Christopher and Mary Frances Lovell, of Western Reserve, Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia.
DUTY NOBLY DONE
347 Private Edward John Lovell, 13th Machine Gun Company (4th Reinforcement Group). Born at Allansford in 1895, the son of Christopher and Mary Frances (Manson) Lovell, of Western Reserve, Warrnambool. He spent three years in the Boys’ Naval Reserve before he enlisted on 22nd June 1916, aged 20, at Warrnambool. He embarked on RMS Orontes on 16th August 1916, transferred to 11th Machine-Gun Company, and disembarked in France on 20th January 1917.
Lovell died on 2nd October 1917 at No. 2 Canadian CCS (Remy Siding) of wounds suffered in the lead-up to the Battle of Broodseinde. Buried Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium, Grave XX.F.17. His name is also commemorated on Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour, Melton War Memorial, Warrnambool Soldiers' Memorial, and the Christ Church Roll of Honour, Warrnambool. Will Jackway and Edward Lovell who are both on the Christ Church Roll of Honour are first cousins, as Will’s mother Maria and Edward’s father Christopher were siblings.
