Private Stanley Richard Whitrod (Service No:756) enlisted in the AIF on 7 February 1916 with 2nd Depot Battalion, and was attached to 43rd Infantry Battalion on 9 June 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Adelaide for Southampton via Egypt on board HMAT A19 Afric. Private Whitrod served with 43rd Infantry Battalion on the Western Front - Flanders, Messines, the Somme, Villers-Brettoneux. WiA (GSW hand) on 1 June 1918, Private Whitrod was evacuated to hospital in England, and on 25 January 1919 embarked from England for Port Adelaide on board HT Ceramic. Private Whitrod was attached to 43rd Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 24 April 1919. Younger brother Ernest served in WWI, and Gordon served in WWII. Both sons (Leslie and Donald) served in WWII.

Stan was born in Adelaide, South Australia in 1893, eldest of seven children of Richard James Whitrod (b1873 at Kanmantoo via Nairne, South Australia) and Frances (Fanny) Elizabeth Childs (b1873 at Encounter Bay in Victor Harbor, South Australia). Richard (a Bootmaker) and Fanny married in 1893 in Adelaide, where they settled (Thebarton and Plympton) and raised their family. Richard worked as a Bootmaker and later as a Driver for Messrs Ryan & Sons Plympton. 

Stan worked in Plympton as a Farm Labourer before enlisting in the Army in 1916. Following his Discharge, in 1919 in Nangkita Stan married Priscilla Victoria Blanche Langley (b1894 in Petersburgh, South Australia). Stan and Priscilla settled in Plympton, where they raised their family and Stan worked as a Labourer and Mental Asylum Attendant. Stan was on holiday in Tooperang in 1939 when he had an accident on his bicycle, and died from a fractured skull. Priscilla died in 1969.
