Biography contributed by Bronwyn Higgs

Born in 1890 at Bacchus Marsh, Charles Rupert Edwards was the son of Thomas Edwards, a farmer and wheelwright and his wife, Honora Jane Richards, both of Bacchus Marsh district.

Charles was one of three brothers who enlisted in the AIF and all rerturned home safely. He enlisted on 19 August, 1914 and served in the 2nd Light Horse Regiment, C Squadron, where he served firstly in  Egypt and then at Gallipoli, remaining until evacuated. He returned to Australia on 15 September, 1918.

In 1915, he wrote to his parents of his war experiences and part of that correspondence was published in the Bacchus Marsh Express (see documents).

After the war, he worked variously as a carriage painter, motor painter, signwriter and lineman. He married Violet May Whittick Lindsay in around 1924 and the couple had two sons.
