Biography contributed by Mark Poole
Robert William Poole was known at 'Willie' by his family. He was as the fourth child of 10 to Charles John Burt Poole and Fanny McCulloch Poole (nee Caldwell). His siblings in order were:
1. Alice Jane (married Clapp) b1889
2. Elsie May (married Hacon) b1891
3. James b1892
4. Robert William b1894
5. Jessie Isabella (married Marke) b1896
6. Wesley Charles b1899
7. Alfred George b1901
8. Walter Ernest b1903
9. John Joseph Henry b1905
10. Fanny Elizabeth (married Matthews) b1908.
Willie was very close with his sister Jessie and he was born to a farming family at Girgarre East in north central Victoria. Willie was committed to his family and his church life at the local Cooma church and volunteered despite things not going too well at Gallipoli. He enlisted with his first cousin Sidney Poole b1894 and spent most of his time with cousin Sid in action. He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 08 Dec 1915 only a matter of weeks before the ANZACs were all evacuated from Gallipoli.
Willie is commemorated in plaques in the Cooma Memorial Methodist church near his home.
