Son of Charles Onley and Mary Ann Onley nee Abbott of Kent Town, SA.
Father of William Watson Onley who returned to Australia on 9 December 1918 having served with the 27th Battalion; Walter Frank Onley, Olive Maude Onley, John Oliver Henry Norman Onley, Evelyn Veronica Onley and Milicent Violet Onley
On 5 July 1893 John married Catherine Mary Lenane in the Trinity Church, Adelaide, SA.
Commenced return to Australia on 21 July 1917 aboard HT Euripides disembarking at Fremantle, re-embarking on 13 September 1917 HT Nestor for onward travel to Adelaide disembarking on 20 September 1917.
