11 Apr 1917: Wounded AIF WW1, Private, 2170, 48th Infantry Battalion, Bullecourt (First), GSWs (gun shot wounds) to face and left arm. Hit crossing no-man’s land after going “over the top” at dawn. Apparently knocked unconscious for some time. Regained consciousness entangled in barbed wire in full daylight. In full view of both sides. He realised he was assumed dead but if he began to move he would be shot again. So he stayed still until darkness then disentangled himself and crawled back to his trenches. (Source: this story was told by a fellow serving soldier verbally to his son and wife in the 1930s)
