Bob was called up in the first national service intake and underwent basic training at 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, Puckapunyal. Upon completion of basic training, he was posted the 5th Battalion RAR to complete his Infantry Corps Training with 9 Platoon C Company. Bob later transferred to Mortar Platoon promoted to Lance Corporal and served with Mortars for the duration of the tour. He returned to Australia, with the Battalion, aboard HMAS Sydney docking in Sydney on 12 May 1967.
