Albert left from Outer Harbour with his unit on the A19 Afric on 9 June 1916
and upon completion of further training in England, he was sent from
Southampton to France on 25 November. He was wounded in action on 31
July 1917 but was able to rejoin his unit on 26 August. Albert was promoted to
the rank of Lance Corporal on 6 November. He was wounded again when
gassed on 26 May 1918. Albert was made a temporary Corporal on 4 July. He
was wounded for a third time on 1 September. The wound to his left side
resulted in Albert being evacuated and admitted to Lord Derby War Hospital
in Warrington, England on 4 September. He returned to Australia on the
Orsova on 8 January 1919 and was discharged on 27 April. Albert married into
the Heinrich family of Freeling.
