Wilfred left Adelaide on board the Afric on 7 November 1916, arriving at Plymouth, England on 9 January 1917 and was sent to France on 19 April. He was killed in action in Belgium on 29 September. On 12 May 1918 Wilfred’s mother Bertha wrote to the Army asking that his clothes and watch be returned to her. The Army replied on 21 May advising her son’s army uniform could not be returned to her as they were, “property of the Government ... only goods of sentimental value are returned to next of kin.”
Bertha was granted a pension of one pound per fortnight from 11 December 1917. Private Wilfred Harold Mangelsdorf is listed on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial in Belgium.
