A Soldiers Story

Peter was born in Somerton Park, Adelaide on 28 May 46 to Robert Leonard (Len) Elsegood and Olive Elsegood (nee Fowler). There were 3 children in the family; 2 boys and a girl. His father was a dental technician in North Terrace, Adelaide.
He went to primary school at Glenelg and then secondary School at Brighton. On completion of schooling he undertook an apprenticeship as a dental technician with his father. In the final year of his apprenticeship his marble was drawn for National Service, but he was able to defer for a year to complete his training.
In May 67 he enlisted in the Army and was sent to Puckapunyal (Vic) to undertake Recruit Training and was then posted to Healsville for Corps Training. In mid Oct 67 he was posted back to Pucka for general duties and promoted to Corporal.
He embarked for Vietnam (SVN) in early May 68, initially posted to Vung Tau for a period of 6 months, before being sent to Nui Dat for a further 6 months. In both locations he was attached to 8 Field Ambulance. His tour of duty in SVN concluded in early May 69 and he returned to Australia, taking his discharge the next day in Adelaide.
Peter returned to his employ with his father until his father retired in 1983. He then took over the business in North Adelaide and continued as a dental technician until 1998, when he retired. He then undertook a lifestyle change and moved to Andamooka as an opal “gouger”, where he remained until 2006. It was here that he met his current partner, Anne Semple – and what a fortuitous meeting it was!
Originally the couple bought a block of land in Coffin Bay, but after driving through Tumby Bay, sold the block at Coffins and bought 2 blocks in Treasure Crescent, Tumby Bay. They built a house on one of the blocks in early 2007 – whilst waiting for the completion of the house they rented a farm house at Yallunda Flat from Tony and Rosemary Bellinger, finally moving into their home in Feb 2007 and becoming residents of Tumby Bay.
Peter played both Baseball and Tennis whilst in Adelaide and is a good prospect for lawn bowls in Tumby. He is a member of the RSL.
