"Sergeant Michael Carroll enlisted in the Australian Regular Army on 10 September 1958 and was allotted to the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. He joined 4th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment on 12 March 1964.
On 13 September 1968 during Operation Hawkesbury, Sergeant Carroll was the Platoon Sergeant of 7 Platoon, C Company, 4th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment. His platoon was involved in a search and clear operation. At 1745 hours the platoon was fired on by the enemy. The enemy were well dug in and their fire was sustained and accurate.
During the action the platoon commander and the section commander of 3 Section became casualties. In addition to his responsibilities Sergeant Carroll also took over command of 3 Section.
Under orders from the Platoon Commander, he fought forward with the section although it was weakened by casualties. While moving forward he was continually exposed to the enemy and reached the forward line of enemy bunkers alone. He then threw grenades into the bunkers at point blank range.
