Private Nelson Gould Kelly (Service No:S28875) first enlisted in the ACMF on 29 July 1940 and was a Driver when he enlisted in the AIF on 25 March 1941 with 3 Training Battalion. Posted to 2nd/3rd Machine Gun Battalion, Private Kelly embarked with his Unit from Melbourne on 3 September 1941 for the Middle East and from Suez to Batavia on 22 April 1942 on board the Arcadia. Private Kelly was reported Missing, believed PoW of the Japanese on 30 April 1942, confirmed on 22 June 1943. Private Kelly was interned at numerous PoW Camps, including Batavia, Bandoeing Bandung, Tandjong Priok and Makasura. On 29 April 1945, Private Kelly was reported 'safe in Allied hands' (NAA) and embarked from Singapore for Melbourne on 1 October 1945 on board the Tarooma. Private Kelly was hospitalised in Australia and Discharged on 11 January 1946.

Born in Rose Park, South Australia in 1920, Nelson was the eldest child of Norman Gould Kelly (b1888 in Kapunda, South Australia) and Gwendoline Hocking (b1894 in Adelaide, South Australia). Norman served in WWI (Service No:3174) and was a Grazier in 1919 when he and Gwendoline married in Adelaide. They lived in Riverton, Teal Flat and Orroroo where they raised their family and Norman was a Grazier until his death in 1925. Gwendoline moved to Adelaide.

Nelson was a Farmer when he enlisted in the Army, and following his Discharge, in 1947 in Adelaide married Dorothy Ruth Moar (b1922 in Milang, South Australia) - Dorothy was a Nurse. Nelson and Dorothy settled in Naracoote where they raised their family and Nelson was a Farmer. Nelson died in 1989 and Dorothy in 2022.
