104 years ago today, on the 8th July 1918, Private William Bertie Barker, commonly referred to as Bert, 20th Battalion (Reg No-3754), smelter worker from "Barkerville", 30 Waratah Road, Broadmeadow, New South Wales, was Killed in Action, age 23 years 5 months.
Born at Broadmeadow, New South Wales on the 18th February 1895 to Frederick Josiah (died 8.8.1901 of 45 Hunter Street, Newcastle, New South Wales and Charlotte (died 14.1.1924) Barker of "Barkerville", 30 Waratah Road, Broadmeadow, New South Wales, Bertie enlisted August 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Admitted to 5th Australian Field Ambulance 28.9.1916 (laryngitis). Admitted to hospital 7.10.1916 (laryngitis).
Bertie is resting at Longueau British Cemetery, France. Plot 2 Row A Grave 4.
Mr. Barker’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor, Hamilton St. Peter's Anglican Church Honor Roll, Hamilton St. Peter's Church Memorial Trees, Book of Gold, Broadmeadow or Islington - Independent Order of Rechabites Pride of the Meadow No. 33 Tent Roll of Honor (as Bertie William, photo courtesy of Ed Tonks O.A.M., 11 names inscribed, 3 Fallen, unveiled date and whereabouts unknown), and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at the family gravesite in remembrance of their son’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country.
