Leading Coder Leonard Albert Werrey (Service No:24682) enlisted in the RAN on 22 April 1940 as an Ordinary Seaman on board HMAS Cerberus IV. Rated as Leading Coder on 1 January 1944 on board HMAS Napier, he was attached to HMAS Torrens at Discharge on 18 January 1946.

Len was born in Unley, South Australia in 1922, youngest of two children of Albert Victor Werrey (b1892 in Goodwood, South Australia) and his first wife Ethel Rankine (b1892 in Broken Hill, New South Wales). Albert and Ethel married in 1914 in Adelaide, and moved to Melbourne, Victoria the following year. Albert worked as a Glass Beveller, and he and Ethel  divorced in Adelaide in 1947. Albert remarried in 1950 to Mary Jane Butler (b1893 in Adelaide, South Australia).

Len was a Salesman when he enlisted in the RAN in 1940, and following his Discharge returned to Unley where, in 1949 he married his first wife Dorothy (Joan) Pauline Joan Thomas (b1922 in Glenelg, South Australia) - Joan served in the WAAAF (Aircraftwoman; Service No:107397). Len and Joan divorced, and both remarried in 1969 - Len to Irene Veronice Oehme (nee Fisher; b1923 in Sunbury, Victoria) - Irene served in the WAAAF (Aircraftwoman; Service No:110885). Len and Irene settled in Adelaide - Irene died in 2002 and Len in 2015. 'Such a wonderful, dignified man who will be always remembered and greatly missed' (Centralian Advertiser; 20 January 2015).
