Biography contributed by Hannah Fennell

Ira Faydor Schubert was the fifth child born to Alf and May Schubert, and was known as Spick. He was born in Port Pirie on 25 July 1923, and was educated at Port Pirie Primary SChool and Enfield Technical College in Adelaide.

He began an apprenticeship with Lewis Cabinet Makers of Unley, however the war interrupted and he first served in the Navy, then transferred to the AIF as a commando in the Northern Islands and Borneo.

When the war was over, he escorted Japanese prisoners-of-war back to Japan.

On 3 November 1943, Spick married Joyce Yeoward in the Queen of Angels Church, Thebarton, Adelaide.
