Appointed Provisional Corporal 16 Oct 1916

Appointed Provisional Sergeant in October 1916 10 -18 October during Base Depot training.  These promotions were administrative and were only ever temporary in nature.

Reduced to Private on arrival in UK and Assignment to 3rd Training Battalion Rollestone

Promoted Cpl  6 March1917

Assigned to Fance and reduced to Private before being taken on Strength 27th Battalion 9 April 1917

He was recorded as evacuated to hospital sick 25 July returning to the the 17th Battalion on 22 Sep 1917

The 27th Battalion fought in several on the major battles of the Third Ypres campaign. During the latter stages Howard was Wounded in Action - 5 October 1917

He re-joined the Battalion on 18 Nov but was evacuated when found to have a foreign body in his pectoral (chest) region (presumably shrapnel or bullet fragments)

Admitted Birmingham War Hospital 27 Nov 1917.
