Arnold enlisted in the Australian Infantry Forces on the 31/10/1941 at Unley; his enlistment number was S14287; his next-of-kin was his father William Bates. He was discharged on the 6/5/1943 with the rank of Private with the 12 Anti Aircraft Battery.
He re-enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy on the 22/5/1943 at Kingscote, Kangaroo islnad; his enlistment number was PA3939; his next-of-kin was his wife Margaret Bates. He was discharged on the 5/2/1946 with the rank of Ordinary Seaman on the HMAS Penguin
