Only son of Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Anear of 15 High Street, Grange, SA. He was educated at Welland and Grange schools and served as a Naval Cadet for 2 years in the R.A.N.R. when war broke out and he was called up in September 1939. James was fond of boxing, wrestling and all outdoor sports, his favourite being yachting and he was a member of the Grange Sailing Club, where he sailed his own yacht (Britannia), winning many trophies. He also won the R.A.N.R. Boxing Club trophy in 1937. His father (R.A. Anear) served in the R.A.N. during the Great War.
