Son of John Andrew O'Brien and Helen O'Brien nee Thurgood of Driffield Street, Queenstown, Tasmania formerly of Daylesford, Victoria.

Prior to enlisted George had been apprenticed to a baker, Andrew Lawson of Queenstown, Tasmania for three years.
