Biography

P/O Roy Arthur Drew RAAF DFM of Peterborough. Aged 28. Son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Drew of 31 Victoria Street, Peterborough. Educated at Peterborough Public and High Schools. Fond of sport, cricket, badminton, football and tennis. He won several championship cups inculding a miniature cricket bat. In civil life was a hairdresser at Peterborough, listed in RAAF in June 1940. In October 1940 went into training at Essendon and Wagga where he received his wings. Sailed for overseas on June 25 1941 and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal on June 2nd 1942. He also destroyed two enemy aircraft in February 1942. "A courageous and determined pilot setting an inspiring example" says the citation of his award. He was reported missing as a result of air operations in Middle East on June 17 1942 and is now presumed to have lost his life. The day he was reported missing he was appointed to the rank of Pilot Officer.
