Biography contributed by Trevor Pyatt

Kevan Keane

Flight Sergeant, Royal Australian Air Force (WWII)

Kevan Keane was born on 26 December 1925 at Gawler, South Australia, the son of Leslie Percy Keane (1896–1960) and Jean Evelyn Keane née Wade (1902–1978). He grew up in the eastern suburbs of Adelaide and was educated at Norwood Primary School and Norwood Junior Technical School, where he completed a practical, technically oriented education including mathematics, science, drawing, and trade subjects.

By his late teens Kevan was living with his parents at 48 Magill Road, Norwood, and working as a driver and tally clerk in the timber industry. At the time, his employer was Peters Timber Company, an occupation subject to wartime Manpower controls, which initially delayed his enlistment.

World War II Service

Kevan voluntarily applied for aircrew service with the Royal Australian Air Force on 29 December 1943, formally declaring his willingness to serve for the duration of the war and beyond if required. As he was under 21, his application included written parental consent signed by his father, Leslie Percy Keane.

Following release from Manpower control and medical clearance, Kevan enlisted in the RAAF at No. 5 Recruiting Centre, Adelaide, and was attested on 11 March 1944, aged 18. He commenced training at No. 4 Initial Training School (ITS), Victor Harbour, where he was assessed as physically fit, medically suitable, and of good character.

Although early aptitude reports described him as quiet and cautious, he was recommended for aircrew training and selected for mustering as an Air Gunner. He undertook specialist gunnery training at Air Gunners School, West Sale and East Sale, Victoria, qualifying on the Browning .303 and .50 calibre machine guns, including turret operations. His training results placed him in the satisfactory-to-above-average range, and he was awarded the Air Gunner's Badge in November 1944.

Kevan was subsequently posted to No. 200 Squadron, operating in the South-West Pacific / East Asia theatre during the final phase of the war. He embarked for overseas service in May 1945 and was based at Morotai, a key Allied operational air base.

Between April and August 1945, he completed 18 operational sorties, flying both day and night missions until the cessation of hostilities.

During his service Kevan rose through the non-commissioned ranks, ultimately attaining the rank of Flight Sergeant. His service record notes exemplary conduct, with no disciplinary entries, and confirms that he successfully completed his operational tour.

Kevan was returned to Australia in August 1945 and was discharged on demobilisation on 4 December 1945, having fulfilled the commitment he made when he first applied for aircrew service.

Marriage & Family

After the war, Kevan resumed civilian life in South Australia. His engagement to Pauline Ariel Birch was announced in The Advertiser in September 1947. Pauline had been born on 22 April 1929, the daughter of Reg Birch.

Kevan and Pauline were married on 30 June 1951 at the Clayton Congregational Church, Beulah Park, South Australia. Together they raised a family, and Kevan was remembered as a devoted husband, father, and later grandfather. His surviving family included his children and grandchildren, who are named on his memorial inscription.

Kevan's only known sibling was his elder sister, Margaret Betty Keane, later Cunningham (1924–2016).

Later Life & Death

Kevan lived his later years in Adelaide and maintained close family connections. He passed away on 4 August 1997 at Glenelg, South Australia, aged 71.

He was laid to rest at Enfield Memorial Park, Clearview, South Australia, in:

Campbell Garden, Sub-Section BUSH, Area WE2, Site 2

His memorial plaque reads in part:

"In loving memory of Kevan Keane, aged 71 years.

Beloved husband of Pip.

Father of Andrea & Dave, Louise & Dean, Rosie & Mark, Julie & Craig.

Loving Pappa of Shaun & Sarah, Brayden & Tarryn."

Legacy

Kevan Keane represents a generation of young Australian men who left secure civilian employment to serve during World War II. His record shows no pursuit of rank or distinction beyond duty, but rather steady, reliable service as a trained aircrewman during the final and dangerous months of the Pacific war.

His life was defined by service, family, and quiet commitment, and his wartime record — from voluntary application to operational completion — stands as a complete and well-documented example of Royal Australian Air Force service.
