Youngest of three brothers (Donald, Peter and Ross) who served in WWII, Sergeant Ross Haldane Ragless (Service Nos:305762/S16098/SX11199/442801) initially enlisted in the Militia on 7 February 1939, and was a Corporal attached to 9/23 Light Horse Regiment Signal Corps on 4 February 1941 when he transferred to the AIF with 3 Training Battalion as a Private. Private Ragless - Signaller - served in the Middle East (10 April 1941 - 27 January 1943) with 2/43 Infantry Battalion, and with 13th Field Regiment in New Guinea (16 June 1943 - 19 October 1943). Discharged on 28 January 1943 to enlist in the RAAF the following day, Aircraftman II Ragless enlisted at No 5 Recruiting Centre Adelaide - mustered as Air Crew - and was attached to No 1 Store Depot Melbourne. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman on 25 July 1944, LAC Ragless undertook flight training, which was terminated - he was recommended as Navigator. Sergeant Raglass was attached to Station HQ Richmond at Discharge on 12 September 1945.
Ross was born at Rose Park in Adelaide, South Australia in 1920, youngest of four children of George Haldane Ragless (b1883 in Parkside, South Australia) and Bertha Florence Judell (b1885 in Adelaide, South Australia). George (a Sheep Farmer) and Bertha married in 1912 in Unley Park, and settled in Burnside, where they raised their family and George was a Grazier.
Ross started work as a Civil Servant (Clerk) with the Registry of Motor Vehicles in Adelaide, and in 1945 in Adelaide married Gloria Doreen Roma Thomas (b1924 in Glenelg, South Australia) - Gloria was an Aircraftwoman (Service No:96695) in the WAAAF. Following Discharge from the RAAF, Ross and Gloria settled in Adelaide where they raised their family and Ross was a Civil Servant. Gloria died in 1975, and Ross remarried to Heatherlie Hudson Payne (b1922 in Unley, South Australia). Heatherlie served in the AWAS (Corporal; Service No:SF64835), and worked then in Perth in Western Australia as a Secretary. Ross and Heatherlie settled in Adelaide - Ross died in 2011 and Heatherlie died in 2018.
