The funeral of the late Mr. Merlin Cartledge took place on Wednesday from the home of his father-in-law, Mr. W. Brown, 2 Grant Street West, and a large number of firends joined the cortege to the Old Cemetery. The deceased served with the A.I.F. and was away at the front for four years, during which period he was gassed, the effects of which considerably hastened his death. As a member of the Ballarat Lodge No. 20, I.O.O.F., the deceased was popular and a number of the lodge members attended. The service of the lodge was read by P.G. Br. W. Hayes, who was supported by G.W. Bro W. Martin. Many of the deceased fellow employees of the Gas Co., were present. Tehy also sent a beautiful wreath expressive of their sympathy with the young widow and her two children. The Rev. C.C. Dugan, of Lydiad Street Church, officiated at the home and graveside. The foffin bearers were Messrs. W. and E. Cartledge (uncles of the deceased), H. Copperwaite and E. Sing. Amongst the pall-bearers and other representatives were Messrs. C. Wade, J. Downing, S. Veal, W. Lee, W.B. Paterson, C. Cockrill, R. Bates, F. Penna, C. Wright, F. Frood and C. Colbert. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messsrs. F.W. Barnes and Son.
