Herbert was born in Dimboola Victoria on 11th February 1899 and went to Wagin WA with his parents in 1908 at the age of 8. While working as a farmer, and as soon as he was of age, Herbert enlisted in the AIF at Collie. His regimental number was 3607 and he served in the Middle East with the 10th Light Horse Regiment. He was granted the 1914-1918 Medal and Victory Medal. After the Great War he returned to Australia on 23rd December 1918, and became a Locomotive Engine Driver with the Western Australian Government Railways, operating mainly from Wagin and Collie. He married Ethel Gertrude Gell nee Roberts on 4th March 1937. They have three children Doris born 1942, Irene born 1943 and Peter born 1944. He died in Nedlands Perth aged 76 on 5th May 1975 and is buried in the Karrakatta Cemetery Lawn 5 Niche Wall W6 0181.
