Flight Sergeant George Frederick Quinn (Service No:416999) enlisted in the RAAF at No 5 Recruiting Centre Adelaide on 8 November 1941 as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Air Crew V and re mustered later as Airman Pilot. From 26 March 1943 to 11 February 1944, Flight Sergeant Quinn was attached to No 77 Squadron (New Guinea campaign - 5 strikes and attacks and 29 other ops). On 27 May 1944, Flight Sergeant Quinn was ferrying RAAF Wirraway A20 - 634 from No 1 Aircraft Depot (Laverton) to Northern Australia when he descended to avoid low cloud and crashed on the salt pan at Island Lagoon via Port Augusta. Flight Sergeant Quinn (Pilot) and crew member Flight Sergeant John Hayes (Navigator) were killed.

George was born Adelaide, South Australia in 1921, fourth of seven children of John Joseph Quinn (b1884 in Burra, South Australia) and Sarah May Newman (b1888 at Acacia Siding via Broken Hill, NSW). John and Sarah married in 1910 in Adelaide, where they settled and raised their family and John worked as a Labourer and Box Maker.

George started an apprenticeship as a Saw Sharpener with Walter & Morris Ltd Port Adelaide in 1936, and was working for the company in 1941 when he enlisted in the RAAF.
