Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
Thomas was born in Brisbane during 1890 but his mother died in 1895. His father died in Brisbane during 1907 when he was still only 17 years of age. He appears to have been brought up by his aunt (Dad’s sister), Martha Johnston, who was living in Drummoyne in Sydney and was named by Thomas as next of kin.
A note in his service file says he was killed outright by a shell near Mouquet Farm and buried about 100 yards away. His younger brother, 3692 Pte. John Adrian Ballantine 49th Battalion was killed in action at Mouquet Farm about three weeks later, 4 September 1916, aged 23. The younger brother John was raised by another aunt who lived in Brisbane.
The brothers’ medals were eventually claimed by a surviving brother, William David Ballantine.
