William Charles Douglas was known as ‘Charlie’ to his family and friends. He joined the 9th Battalion on the Western Front during May 1916 and was then severely wounded at Pozieres on 21 August 1916. He suffered a gunshot wound to the back and also had a fractured collar bone. Despite being transported to the 2nd Australian General Hospital in Boulogne, France, he died of his wounds 10 days later.
His younger brother, 621 Private John Douglas 25th Battalion AIF had already been sent home to Australia disabled by frost bitten feet suffered at Anzac. James died in a railway accident in Brisbane during 1917. Another older brother, 6315 Private John Douglas 26th Battalion AIF, died of wounds in France on 28 June 1918, aged 40.
They were the three sons of James and Jane Douglas of Petrie Terrace, Brisbane, Queensland.
