Leading Aircraftman/Acting Corporal James Francis Cashen (Service No:140520) enlisted in the RAAF at No 5 Recruiting Centre Adelaide on 15 June 1943 as an AIrcraftman I - mustered as Equipment Assistant. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman on 1 June 1945, he served at Nazreb, New Guinea (23 January 1944 - 10 August 1945) with 25 Stores Unit. A/Corporal Cashen was attached to 14 Stores Unit at Discharge on 8 May 1946. Both of his siblings - Jack and Bill - also served in WWII.

Jim was born in Kalgoorlie, WA in 1915, third of four children (and second son) of Patrick Thomas Cashen (b1871 in Maldon, Victoria) and Mary (Sis) Sheedy (b1882 in Adelaide, South Australia). Patrick had moved to Fremantle, WA in the early 1900s, working in Fremantle as a Draper before settling in Coolgardie, where in 1910 he and Sis married. Patrick and Sis settled in Coolgardie, where they raised their family and Patrick was Manager of Messrs Brennan Bros Drapers. Patrick was transferred to manage the Kalgoorlie business in 1917, and died in 1924. Mary then moved to Adelaide, South Australia with the children.

Jim was an active member of the Catholic Young Men's Society (CYMS) Adelaide, and worked as a Storeman and Clerk. Jim had been working for General Motors Holdan as a Supervisor (Anti Tank Gun Protection Control) for three years when, in 1943 in Hindmarsh, he married Phyllis Marcella Dillon (b1917 in Boulder, WA) - Phyllis was working as a Clerk in Hindmarsh. Following his Discharge from the RAAF, Jim and Phyllis settled in Adelaide, where they raised their family. Jim died in 1999 and Phyllis in 2012.
