Son of Charles Henry Hush and Catherine Hush of Railway Gate, Queanbeyan, NSW. Brother of George Richard Hush who returned to Australia on 9 June 1917 having served with the 13th Battalion

On 31 January 1916 Ernest had enlisted but was discharged on 24 April 1916 at Goulburn as undesirable.

At the time of enlistment Ernest was employed with the railways. 

Commenced return to Australia on 11 January 1918 aboard HT Port Darwin disembarking on 7 March 1918
