Lorraine was the seventh of nine children of Donald Archibald McKinnon (born 1881 in Clare, South Australia) and Ada Florence Shaw (born 1882 in Stockport, South Australia). In 1903 Donald and Ada married in Broken Hill - a mining town in outback NSW near the border of South Australia. They settled in Broken Hill where Donald worked as an Engine Driver, although were frequently in South Australia - which is where their children enlisted in WWII.

In July 1942 Lorraine enlisted in the RAAF, and was a Corporal (Service No:96837) attached to 4 Embarkation Depot when she was Discharged in March 1946. Brothers Eric Donald (Private, Service No:SX15762), Colin Malcolm (Sapper, Service No:SX89191) and Lawrance (Leading Aircraftman, Service No:141808) also served in WWII. as did Brother-in-Law George Brian McLachlan (Leading Aircraftman, Service No:121747).

Lorraine was in Broken Hill in 1956 when she married Richard Thomas Toohey (born 1918 in Toowoomba, QLD). Richard had served as a Private (Service No:SX14441) with 2/10th Infantry Battalion in WWII, and was a Grazier at Oakdale near Broken Hill. Lorraine and Richard lived at Oakdale Station via Broken Hill where Richard was a Grazier. He died in 1990 and Lorraine in 2000.
