76 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 3rd September 1946, Private Robert Cyrus Hilton Burns, referred to as Hilton, 46th Battalion (Reg No-2870), dairy farmer from Jerrys Plains, New South Wales and 72 Fawcett Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 51. ANGLICAN 3-154. 25.
Born at Singleton, New South Wales on the 17th February 1895 to George and Fanny Maria Burns of "Ellerslie", Jerrys Plains, N.S.W. and "Allambi", Albert Street, South Singleton, N.S.W.; husband of Mercy May Burns nee Tanner (married 1920, Scone, N.S.W., died 1954, sleeping here), Hilton enlisted October 1916 at Rutherford, N.S.W.
Report that Robert (referred to as Hilton) and brother Cecil farewelled and presented with wristlet watches at the Jerrys Plain School of Arts.
Admitted to hospital 29.10.1918 (gluteal abscess, mild).
Wounded in action 10.8.1917 (GSW left side).
Hilton returned home November 1919, being discharged on the 12th January 1920.
Mr. Burns’s name has been inscribed on the Singleton & District War Memorial.
Unfortunately, Hilton’s headstone plaque inscription is now almost unreadable, and I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at the gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Older brother Cecil Henry (46th Battalion, Reg No-2869, born 1892, Singleton, N.S.W., KIA 19.10.1917, 1st Battle of Passchendaele, age 25) memorialised at parent's gravesite at the cemetery. ANGLICAN 2-145. 63.
