Horace Roy Stow was born on the 27th of May 1894, in Hope Valley, South Australia. Before his enlistment in the Australian Imperial Force, Horace worked as a Shop Assistant. Horace had 4 years of prior military experience through involvement in the Citizen Forces, 79th Battalion.
In Adelaide, on the 9th of August 1915, Horace enlisted for the AIF. Horace was 21 years and 2 months when enlisting. He was recorded at 5 feet 2 inches, his chest measurement was 31.34 inches, and he weighed 116 lbs. His complexion was fair, with grey eyes and brown hair. Horace was recorded as of Congregational faith.
Horace embarked from Adelaide on the HMAT Warilda 10 February 1916 and disembarked in Egypt. Horace was posted to the 1st Light Horse Regiment on the 8th of March 1916 in Heliopolis, before transferring to the 5th Division Artillery in Moascar on the 21st of April 1916. He was mustured as a gunner but within 3 weeks was appointed as a Driver. He was appointed as acting bombardier 16th May 1916.
He proceeded overseas to join the British Expeditionary Force in France and disembarked at Marseilles 30 June 1916. He reverted to the rank of Driver at his own request 16th July 1916.
While in the field, Horace was hospitalised due to illness and was admitted on the 25th of November 1916 with a fever of unknown origin. Stow returned to the unit on the 28th, after only 3 days from his initial hospital admission.
Horace was admitted to hospital because of a sprained left ankle on the 30th of November 1916. He returned to duty after recovering and was remustured as a gunner at his own request 31st December 1916 with the 8th Divisional Ammunition Column.
In November 1918 he took leave and became sick while on leave and needed to be hospitalised. Horace returned to Australia 3rd September 1919 and was discharged from the AIF 27th October 1919.
Horace married Olive Mabel Stow. He passed away on the 21st of October 1968 at 74 years old. His wife Olive Mabel Stow, passed away at age 82, on October 21, 1986 and she was buried with him.
