Died on this date - 14th April........Gunner William Harold Sampson was born in Launceston, Tasmania in 1885. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 10th October, 1916 as a 28 year old, single, Bank Clerk from Hobart, Tasmania.
Gunner Sampson was hospitalised in Australia while in Camp from 30th July, 1917 until 6th August, 1917 with Tonsillitis. He was again hospitalised from 5th October with Influenza & later pharyngitis & was transferred to Rest Camp from 16th to 19th October, 1917.

Gunner Sampson embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on 9th November, 1917 & was hospitalised on the Ship for 3 days from 12th November, 1917. The troops disembarked at Suez & entrained through Italy before arriving in England on 4th January, 1918. He was posted to Reserve Brigade Australian Artillery at Heytesbury, Wiltshire on 4th January, 1918 for further training.
Gunner Sampson was admitted to Military Hospital at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire on 9th April, 1918.

Gunner William Harold Sampson died on 14th April, 1918 at the Military Hospital, Sutton Veny of Empyema; general toxaemia (verified by Post Mortem). He was buried in St. John the Evangelist Churchyard at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire England where 140 other Australian WW1 Soldiers are buried & 2 Australian WW1 Nurses.

William Harold Sampson was born in Launceston, Tasmania on 10th April, 1885 to parents Richard and Caroline Eliza Sampson (nee Pollard). 

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 10th October, 1916 stating he was a 28 year old, single, Bank Clerk from Hobart Savings Bank, Hobart, Tasmania.

From 30th July, 1917 until 6th August, 1917 Gunner Sampson was admitted to No. 5 General Hospital with Tonsillitis.

He admitted to Clearing Hospital at Maribyrnong (Melbourne) from 5th – 6th October, 1917 with Influenza then transferred to No. 5 General Hospital from 6th – 11th October, 1917 with pharyngitis. Gunner Sampson was transferred to No. 14 Australian Auxiliary Hospital from 11th – 16th October, 1917 then transferred again to Rest Camp at Macleod from 16th – 19th October, 1917.

Gunner William Harold Sampson, Service number 37737, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Port Sydney (A15) on 9th November, 1917. Gunner Sampson was admitted to Ship’s Hospital, while at Sea from 12th November – 15th November, 1917 with catarrh. He disembarked at Suez on 12th December, 1917. Gunner Sampson embarked on HMT Karoa from Alexandria on 18th December, 1917 & disembarked at Taranto (Italy) on 22nd December, 1917. Gunner Sampson disembarked at Southampton, England on 4th January, 1918.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.

On 4th January, 1918 Gunner Sampson was marched in to R.B.A.A. (Reserve Brigade Australian Artillery) at Heytesbury, Wiltshire.

He was sent sick to Hospital at Sutton Veny with adenoids then reported seriously ill “N.Y.D.” (Not yet determined) & admitted to the Military Hospital at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire on 9th April, 1918 (Hospital Admissions form states date admitted as 9th April; Casualty Form – Active Service has date admitted as 10th April).

 

Gunner William Harold Sampson died on 14th April, 1918 at the Military Hospital, Sutton Veny of Empyema; general toxaemia (verified by Post Mortem).

He was buried in St. John the Evangelist Churchyard, Sutton Veny, Wiltshire, England where 140 other WW1 Australian Soldiers & 2 WW1 Australian Nurses are laid to rest.
