Leading Aircraftman Howard Wilfred Roberts (Service No:47360) enlisted in the RAAF as an Aircraftman I on 30 December 1941 at No 5 Recruiting Centre Adelaide - mustered as Trainee and remustered as Flight Mechanic. ACI Roberts served with No 1 Elementary Flying Training School (EFTS) and served in Merauke, New Guinea with No 12 Squadron (23 June 1942 - 2 April 1944) - remustered as a Fitter. ACI Roberts was attached to No 36 Squadron in May 1944 and in September was promoted to Leading Aircraftman attached to No 34 Squadron. LAC Roberts was attached to 3 Air Observers' School (AOS) at Discharge on 12 December 1945. LAC Roberts was one of five siblings (Ernest, Clarence, Charles and Allan) who served in WWII.
Born in 1917 at Balaklava in South Australia, Howard was seventh of ten children of Sydney Dean Roberts (b1878 in Dublin, South Australia) and Ellen Frances Emily Rose (b1881 at Reedbeds, South Australia). Sydney (a Labourer) and Ellen married in 1901 in Windsor, South Australia and lived in Adelaide, Long Plains, Balaklava, Mallala and Medindie where they raised their family and Sydney was a Labourer.
Howard worked as a Storeman, Clerk and Mechanic, and was in Adelaide in 1940 when he married Rita Cynthia May Verco (b1917 in Adelaide, South Australia). Howard and Cynthia were Divorced by the early 1960s when Cynthia remarried. Howard died in 1999.
