Biography contributed by Penny Black

Roger was born to Dr Eustace Couper Black and Julia, an English nurse whom he had met in England during his service in WW1. Eustace was the GP in Spalding, South Australia when Roger was born. They later moved to Adelaide where Roger attended St Peter's College. Roger was a science student at the University of Adelaide when he enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force. His eyesight was insufficient to be a pilot so he became an electrical fitter in Bowen.

Roger met and married Ivy Ada Tanner in Sydney in 1943 and settled in Sydney after the war. Roger completed a PhD in science at Sydney University and became a botanist like his grandfather, John McConnell Black. Roger had five children and also worked in QLD, WA and the NT. He returned to Adelaide from WA in 2000s and volunteered at the State Herbarium.
