Son of Mrs E.M. and the late D. BUTTERY of 65 East Parade, Kensington, SA.  Married with four children and residing at 14 Brand Street, Kensington, Leslie was educated at Magill and Norwood Technical Schools, played tennis and football for Norwood and North Adelaide teams for some years and later acted as umpire for League and Association matches.  In civilian life he worked as a cabinetmaker and later with Worthington & Marston as electrical engineer for seven years.  He joined the RAAF in May 1940.
