Ronald Campbell was one of 10 children of Samuel Percy and Annie Maria Campbell, who lived at Little Billabong near Holbrook NSW. A labourer prior to enlisting at Cootamundra, NSW, he embarked from Sydney aboard during November 1916. He was wounded in action in Belgium 20 September 1917 and evacuated to England with a shrapnel wound to his right thigh. He returned to his unit during early 1918 and was killed in action on 23 August 1918 in France, aged 26.
His older brother 4964 Private Archibald Duncan Campbell 3rd Battalion AIF was killed in action at Pozieres 17 August 1916, age 25.
Another brother, 6489 Pte. Percy William Campbell M.M. also 3rd Battalion AIF, was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in rescuing wounded men during September 1918 before returning to Australia during 1919.
