WALTER GEORGE GASTON

 

Walter was the son of Edwin Burfield GASTON & Harriet Jane MOORE was born on the 31st of May 1908 in Kadina, SA.

He was the youngest child born into the family of 8 childre.

His parents were married on the 5th of May 1896 at his maternal grandparent’s home, Sandridge House, Sandy Creek.

His mother was the daughter of James Alexander MOORE & Maria Ann LAWRANCE and was born on the 6th of August 1875 in Mananarie SA.

His father was the son of Edward GASTON & Penelope LAWSON and was born on the 5th of February 1869 in Williamstown.

 

The family lived in New Town, Kadina and his father was employed in the Wallaroo Copper Mine as miner.

The family later moved to Hectorville.

 

His mother died on the 25th of August 1921 when Walter was 13 years old.

 

Walter joined the 10th Battalion in 1922 and completed his training by 1926.

He was employed as a mechanic with Autocare Ltd, in Flindres Street, Adelaide and the RAA from 1936.

He married Mavis Nina CHIVELL on the 23rd of January 1937 in Christ Church, Maylands, SA. Mavis was the daughter of Albert CHIVELL & Jane SIVIOUR and was born on the 28th of February 1910 in Brinkworth, SA.

They moved to 16 George Street, Norwood.

Walter enlisted into the RAAF on the 2nd of July 1940 in Adelaide and was allotted the service number 26949. He was appointed to No. 1 Recruitment Depot, Laverton, VIC when Mavis was 7 months pregnant.

He was then posted to No. 1 ES (Engineering School) at Ascot Vale and whilst there their first child; Peter Burfield, was born on the 9th of September 1940.

 

On the 10th of September 1941 Walter was posted to No. 6 SFTS (Service Flying Training School), Mallala.

On the 27th of September 1942 they welcomed twin boys into the family; John Graeme & Trevor Dene.

 

On the 25th of January 1943 he attended No. 4 STT (School of Technical Training) North Terrace, Adelaide.

On the 13th of April 1945 he was posted to No. 1 OTU (Operational Training Unit), Sale, VIC.

On the 28th of June 1945 Walter received a letter from the RAA (Royal Automobile Association) offering him re employment.

He applied for his discharge on the 9th of August 1945 to recommence employment with the RAA and to help Mavis, with caring for their 3 children.

 

Walter was finally discharged on the 8th of November 1945. He was a Sergeant posted to No. 1 OTU (Operation Training Unit) Sale, VIC at the time.

 

Walter died on the 19th of August 1961 at Glynde Road, Hectorville and is buried in the Enfield Memorial Park; Section General, Row AD, Plot 109.
