John William Huggan was born on the 9th of May 1891 in Northumberland, England. He then moved to Adelaide at an unknown date. He enlisted on November 23rd 1916. At the time, he was 25 years of age and single. He was in the 5th Pioneer Batallion and the unit embarked from Adelaide on board the HMAT Seang Bee on the 10th of February 1917. John served for around 6 months and returned to Australia on August 25th, 1917. His service record indicates that he was discharged due to severe asthma after spending time in hospital in England.
