Sergeant Padman was killed when RAAF Wirraway aircraft A20-189 of Number 5 Squadron crashed into the sea at Swimashore Bay off Wilsons Promontory, Victoria while taking part in Army co-operation exercises. The pilot was seriously injured but survived the war - Pilot Officer Watchorn 400848 (later FLTLT DFC)
