Son of Mr and Mrs McCARTHY of 18 Bishop Avenue, Alberton, SA.  Educated at Martist Brothers School, Alberton, he was fond of swimming and was a member of the Port Adelaide A Rowing Club.  In civlian life he worked at Carr Fasteners Ltd., and enlisted in January 1941.
