Eric was the youngest son of the late Mr. F.J. McDonald, at one time Mayor of Karori (New Zealand). He was born at Invercargill on July 28, 1899 and came to Australia with his parents in 1903. He was educated at St. Leonard's Superior Public School, and joined the reading staff of the Sydney Morning Herald in February 1916.
On October 30, 1916 he enlisted and was posted to reinforcements for the 2nd Battlaion, sailing from Australia in November. He was in action in the Ypres sector in the autumn of 1917, this embracing the battles of Polygon Wood, Broodseinde Ridge and Passchendaele, and later at Wytschaete and Hill 60. His unit was afterwards removed to the Somme sector, where it remained till the armistice was signed. Mc. Donald was a Signaller and was afterwards appointed Lance Corporal.
