Nicholas Joseph Lenaghan enlisted in the AIF in Melbourne on 11 November 1914, aged almost 39. He embarked overseas on 13 April 1915 and arrived in Egypt on 17 May 1915.
After several months training, he left Egypt and joined the 4th Light Horse Regiment at Gallipoli on 2 October 1915, where they held defensive positions around Ryrie’s Post.
The regiment left Gallipoli on 11 December 1915 and arrived back in Egypt on 27 December 1915.
Trooper Nicholas Joseph Lenaghan was diagnosed with measles (initially thought to be smallpox) on 8 May 1916 and hospitalised at the No. 2 Stationary Hospital at Tel el Kebir, Egypt.
He haemorrhaged while in hospital and died on 8 May 1916.
He was buried later the same day in the Tel el Kebir War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
