Biographical details: Upon completion of basic training, Jack embarked HMAS Aeneas in Melbourne on 30 October, bound for Devonport, England. He was admitted to hospital at sea and treated for hernia. Further training was undertaken by Jack at Sutton Veny with the B 213 Training Battalion on 27 December 1917 and at Weymouth Command Depot on 27 May 1918. He returned to Australia on 7 June 1918 where he was discharged due to recurrent hernia on 25 November 1918.
