Alfred Linnell was born on the 24th of November, 1888 in Northamptonshire, England. Alfred's mother was Mrs F Linnell who lived in Northamptonshire, England. In adult life he lived in South Australia and worked as a bootmaker. There was no mention of his schooling.
Alfred Linnell enlisted for World War I on the 5th of July, 1915 and was accepted into the army on the 12th of July 1915 at the age 25 when he received his regimental number 551. Alfred Linnell was single when enlisting and left his mother in England where he went to Prospect, South Australia. There is no mention of Alfred's father.
The 32nd Bn (Headquarters, Signallers, A, B, C, and D Companies) embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on two ships, HMAT A2 'Geelong', on 18 November 1915, and HMAT A13 'Katuna', on 24 November 1915. Linnell was on the Geelong. After training in Egypt, Alfred Linnell and his unit arrived in Marseilles on the 23.6.16. Alfred then was wounded at Fromelles on 19 July 1916, suffering from shell shock. This caused his evacuation to England, but he rejoined his unit in September.
Alfred Linnell returned to Australia on the 13th of April 1919. At some point in time Alfred got married to Ethel Linnell.
Alfred returned to service on the 1st of April 1942 in the 2nd (Northern Adelaide) Battalion volunteer defence corps. He recruited as a Private with the Regimental number : S68322.
Two years later, Alfred was discharged.
Alfred Linnell died on the 10th of January 1955 at age 66. He was burried in Dudley Park Cemetery, Area: T.A.K. Section: Sub section: Sector: Plot: Row: 021 Grave: 356.
