Biography

Stanley Joseph Mills was a Director of Mills & Ware Ltd, the biscuit and cake manufacturing firm founded by his father William Mills. William Mills commenced business as a baker in Subiaco in 1895 and went into partnership in Cottesloe with Henry Ware in 1897. The company moved to Fremantle in 1899. On Henry Ware's death in 1904, the company passed into the full control of the Mills family and became a Limited Company in 1924.

With the unexpected death of his father William Mills, (of Messrs. Mills & Ware Biscuits Pty Ltd.) in October 1916, Stanley applied for 6 months unpaid leave. The news of his father's death had taken 2½ to reach him. So it was January 1917 before leave was granted and Stanley was able to make his own way home. There to execute his father's will and to keep the business on its feet. Stanley's appointment was ultimately terminated on 15 Jun 1917. Termination was at Stanley's request when an application to extend his leave was denied, and the option to terminate was instead offered.
