Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School

Horace Bertram Haddy was born on May 11, 1893 in Mount Gambier, South Australia. He is the son of Mrs E M Haddy. Information is lacking around the details of his father. He grew up in South Australia, eventually going the University of Adelaide and appearing on the junior examination Honour Roll (Trove, 1908).

Haddy enlisted on the 5th of July 1915 at the age of 22. He had previously served 6 months in the senior cadet’s 1st battalion. After going to Egypt for training and getting promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal, he was sent off to participate in the Battle of Fromelles with the 32nd Infantry Battalion, Company B. On the 20th of July 1916, he was reported missing and then subsequently captured by Germans. After being transferred to a POW camp in Holland, the war ended, and he was sent to England and then discharged.

There is also evidence to prove that he participated in WWII (1939 - 1945). There is information that suggests this as there is an enlistment date and a new service number. However, there is no other information that can help tell this part of his story.

He died on the 22 March 1964. His grave is located at the Centennial Park Cemetery, Sutton Court, Wall 3 Niche E008 Memorial ID: 151296702
